I photographed this little man while still in his Mama’s belly, so you can just imagine how bittersweet it was for me to photograph him in celebration of his first birthday <insert sigh>.

I’m so thankful to have been a witness to the journey he and his parents have enjoyed this past year.

It’s my hope that one day….in 30/40+ years, because of these images, they can close their eyes and hear the laughter, smell the baby smell, taste the cupcakes and feel the excitement of his first year of life.

I’ve been wanting to try something new (beyond a cake smash) with a 1 year old for awhile. I’ve been planning to do this with my daughter when she turns 1, but am glad we got to do it with this cutie first. I’m sure he’s made his Grandmother (who’s an art teacher) very proud.

Everyone always asks what kind of paint we used. This is what we used – Non-toxic paint.

He was not too happy to be covered in yucky paint so a cheeto saved the day and put a smile on his face.

I love how you can see the texture created by his diaper.

His Daddy said he was also going to save/frame the paintbrushes. Isn’t that an awesome idea?!

Admiring his masterpiece.

It was hard work eating cupcakes and painting. After his big clean up he enjoyed some quiet time with Mommy.

  16. Hi!
I want to do a painting with my one year old, but I am sure he is going to try to eat the paint, dkid you have thjs problem or did you use a special paint?

Btw…I am from Guatemala ๐Ÿ˜‰ just so you know how far your blog reached.

  17. Hello Guatemala ๐Ÿ™‚ We used non-toxic paint. We didn’t have any issues with him eating the paint. However, I did have 2 parents watching like hawks and swooping in whenever necessary. Just make sure you have towels/wipes/water on hand. It can get messy ๐Ÿ˜‰
