Thank a Mail Carrier Day

DEEP END LEARNING I February 4th

February 4th marks Thank a Mail Carrier Day in the United States. To honor these everyday heroes, we’ve put together some fun activities, clever thank-you card printables and mail themed books to read to help you and your family learn, celebrate and show your appreciation.

Child Drawing Thank You Card

Our favorite activity for this fun holiday is making homemade cards. We’ve included these fun notes that the kids can then personalize the back of.  Encourage kids to use crayons, markers, stickers, and more to decorate and add their own touch. We even add a dash of essential oil to make the mail extra happy and memorable.

Having a ready-to-print card can often be the spark that motivates us to express gratitude to those we appreciate. I enjoy printing these cards and letting the kids add their personal touch by decorating the back. At a convenient size of 5×7, they fit perfectly into an envelope or can be attached to a small thank-you gift.

Books

Today’s a great opportunity to engage your kids with the history and importance of mail. To get started, here are some recommended books that capture the essence and significance of sending mail throughout history.

  1. “Delivering Your Mail: A Book About Mail Carriers” by Ann Owen: This book introduces kids to the work of mail carriers, explaining how they keep the process of receiving and sending mail running smoothly.
  2. “The Jolly Postman” by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: This classic book takes young readers along with a postman as he delivers mail to various fairy tale characters.
  3. “Mule Train Mail” by Craig Brown: Set in the Grand Canyon, this book tells the story of a mail carrier who delivers mail by mule train.

  4. “Charlie the Ranch Dog: Charlie’s New Friend” by Ree Drummond: In this story, Charlie the dog makes a new friend with a mail carrier.

Also, have you ever looked closely at some mailboxes? You might find the year they were installed stamped on the side. It’s like a hidden piece of history right on your street corner.
